Venice, Louisiana is the last outpost accessible by land along the mighty Mississippi River and is square in the middle of the richest fishing grounds in North America. There was once a sign as you entered town that read, "Welcome to the end of the world!" For those that like to fish, however, Venice would more aptly be referred to as the beginning of the world! The Mississippi River Delta is the heart of the food chain for the gulf fishery. The nutrients carried by the river attract every kind of baitfish , the baitfish in turn attract every kind of game fish. From Tarpon to Tuna, from Marlin to Redfish, there is no fish that does not come here to feast in the rich waters of the delta.
One of the things that makes Venice so unique is the fact that we have deep water so close to the mouth of the river. From most ports anglers have to travel 50+ miles to get into 400 feet of water. We have 400 feet less than 6 miles out! At 10 miles we have 1000’. At 23 miles we have 3000’ and at 50 miles the water is 5000+.
The Offshore oil industry has done quite a bit to enrich fishing near Venice as well. There are over 3800 platforms and drill ships accessible to us in water depths ranging from 5’ to 7000’. These platforms create incredible artificial reefs in water that has no other significant structure.
