GARY LAI - DAVIE, FL USA
I flew in with my fishing buddy, Cesar all the way from South Florida on Sunday, August 17th. This was our first time to Venice in search for the beautiful Yellowfin. Our first trip in July was cancelled due to Hurricane Dolly. We met my father in law, Steve and Uncle Cau Hai for this venture. We were not disappointed. The ride was rough and bumpy but the rewards were great. We hooked up about 11 times but were able to keep 6 fish in the 55-60lb range, 2 undersized were released, and 3 got away to fight another day.Captain Peace and deck hand Paul stayed persistent and kept at 'em and it all payed off in the end...It was a very memorable trip indeed with the greatest memory being a 30 second bonanza of countless yellowfins blowing up the surface one after the other in pursuit of baitfish. That was something we'll never forget.

Third time's the charm. After being turned away by Mother Nature two times before, this time we were able to leave the dock. For myself, Sherry, Patrick and Joanna, August 15th was our first time fishing for yellowfin and Capt. Bill got us on the first two fish pretty quick....and then nothing. For a couple hours, I was afraid that 2 would be all we'd get. But Bill kept working and by the end of the day we had 8 Yellowfin in the box. It could have only been 7 due to a broken reel but Bill threw on some gloves and pulled up that fish by hand. Maybe I'm easily impressed, but to me, that was awesome!!! Three of us are looking forward to our next trip. I won't say who, but one of us got sick the moment we hit the Gulf, but never complained. Quite a trooper!!!Aug 18, 2008

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. This weekend held a bit of each for us. The Ugly certanly had to be the weather. It rained just about all weekend and the wind certanly was higher than the 5-10 knts that was forcasted. Yesterday it blew over 20 most of the day.
On Friday, Mike, Billy and Darryl smoked the tuna. The fishing was solid with Mike being the top boat. The fish were right where they had been. I had the pleasure of spending the day bringing my boat back down after being in the shop for a while. It really felt good to get her back down where she belonged.
Saturday the weather was much different than the forcast. Rain and high wind kept most at the dock but my crew and I decided to give it a shot. We had a bit of a tough time making bait but when we got to where we were going, our work paid off in spades. Our first bait never made it into the rigger clip. We went 5-8 in a very short period of time and managed to pop off a nice dolphin in the process as well. Then it slowed. We waited a bit for our next bite but when we got it, we knew something was different. The fish took a lot of drag and was very eratic. When Matt finaly got color, we could tell that it was a big fish. I put a gaff in her and called for a second gaff and when we thumped her on the deck, we called her 160. One hack of a vellowfin for this time of year. We made the call to head for the hill after that one in the face of some pretty nice storms. When we got her to the scale, she went 159.9. My initial guess was pretty darn close. That was the good.
Sunday was an entirely different day. The wind blew all day and the rain was nonstop. We pushed hard running through some serious storms to get back to where we had fished the day before. By one pm we had had one bite and lost it, due to some difficult angeling conditions, no doubt. With rein coming down side ways and the wind blowing 22, we called it and headed in. That was the bad.
Capt. Mike fished a completly different area from me on sunday and the storms didn't reach him until it was time to come in. He had a tough morning but the fish turned on at the end for him. He ended up putting 6 in the boat in the last hour of fishing. Not too shabby. Peace fished not too far from me on Sunday. He said that he pounded it out to get there and they ended up pretty good considering the conditions. I didn't get a number but he cleaned fish for a while.
Darryl had a special guest for an overnighter on Saturday. The weather being what it was, they left very late, and probably would not have left at all if Morten had not come all the way from Denmark to try to catch a yellowfin on fly. Durring the course of the night, they hooked four! Unfortunatly, 20 knts is not too good for light tackle and they broke all four off. They did manage to land a couple of nice dolphin in the process. Hopefully next time we will put one on the deck for Morten.
We have a couple of openings later in the week if anyone is looking to get in on some good action. The forecast is suprisingly good considering the tropics. We are also looking forward to seeing everyone at this years Fishing to hear rodeo on Sunday.

Due to this weather I have a couple of days off to finnish up some work on my boat. He now has a new power head on one engine and assorted other improvements. I cant wait to get her back in the water. It is so comfortable to be back on your boat after fishing another boat for a while. The fishing was very good before this weather docked us for a few days and we are looking forward to getting back after them. We do have a couple of openings at the end of the week that we would love to fill. Give us a call if you are interested. You should be going home with some filled coolers and exausted anglers.
