What a Day! Every now and then, I see something on the water that really gets me going. Today was one of those days. I left the dock with Ashley Rooney and crew and headed south. We made one stop for bait and nada. We moved on and found a few at our next stop but no Tuna. We moved on again and nothing but hungery Barracuda and with a scant few baits, we made one more move. As soon as we pulled up to the rig, I could tell that this was going to be our last stop. The first two baits out got slammed by a pair of 30 pound cow Dolphin. As I was gaffing number two, a nice Bull popped up but we couldn't get a bait to him and he faded away. No problem, we put out the baits and within seconds, he was on the short line. It was starting to get good. As I was putting him in the box, I noticed a huge turtle, and that is always a site. I got the boat turned and reset the baits and boom, a good yellowfin hit and it was game on. He took off and peeled a hundred yards of drag but all of a sudden, the line went limp. Ashley reeled like there was no tommrow and as he came tight again, the 100# Tuna popped up right under the boat. I was thinking that this must be the dumbest tuna ever until one of the guys yelled, there is a huge Sailfish up here. As you may have guessed, the "sailfish" was a lit up pig of a Blue Marlin. When - say pig, I mean pig, it was much longer than my baot is wide. He swam circles around the boat for at least 5 minutes but he wanted a tuna and not a hardtail and we wanted tuna more than he did. Our day was made but we added 3 more nice yellowfin in the box before heading home. That Marlin was one of the coolest things that I have seen in a long time and as my Buddy Gerry Bethge just said as I relayed the story to him, "that is why we do this, it is the chance of seeing or catching that fish." He is so right, what a fine view that we have from our office window.Reel Peace Charters
